Harper's and Pecans

Busy today. Reading an article from the May 2006 Harper's about hog farming in the U.S. It's a disgusting practice. I'm all for capitalism, but is it really ethical to artificially inseminate animals en masse? I think not. I'll tell you all about it when I'm done with the article.

I'm also eating these delicious snacks I found at REI, they're called Sahale Snacks and I'd walk across the Sahara to obtain a package of the Valdosta blend. I really would.

Rolling Stone did an article on hog farming that lead me to give up most meat. You can get to the article from a blog piece I wrote back in February.

And I do miss my bacon ;)

Yeah, I think I remember reading that entry. It made me think about eating a bacon cheeseburger. Then I started to think about how a pig is slaughtered for that crap piece of bacon on a Wendy's cheeseburger. It's not worth the slaughter. You know what I mean? I mean, some pig died for the piece of crap bacon that I don't even eat because it's so fatty and tasteless.

Then I stumbled across this article today. And it makes me want to never eat a piece of bacon that comes from the kind of source described in the article. It's completely unnatural. I guess you could argue that it's natural because it's not produced in a petrie dish. But how far from that is the hog industry? It's completely evil.

I'm not against eating meat. I'm against the mix of capitalism and the treatment of the animal. It's making me sick thinking about how the animals are kept in tiny cages and in this totally sterile environment just to feed people like me.

Humanity has moved so far from the pastoral setting, which not only feeds the body, but also the soul. Perhaps I'm idealizing it, but I believe there must have been some reward for working with animals. A bond of love and gratitude that has to be so far gone from the cage and sterilized barn, and the artificial insemination. It gives me the creeps and depresses the hell out of me.

I've got to dig up a Willa Cather quote about this.
