Atrophy

For eight years I honed my mind with great literature, scholarly and critical articles about literature, folklore and a variety of other subjects such as ecology, French, geology, astronomy (I almost wrote astrology*, ha ha) and music. The past nine months I’ve been writing generic ads to recruit healthcare professionals (physicians, nurses, physical therapists). What took eight years to sharpen into an intellectual weapon and creative tool, has now been undone in nine months of repetitive, useless use.

I’m so depressed today. And I broke my little promise to write about ‘thinking outside the box.’ Check back tomorrow.

*Case in point.

It could be worse; you could be writing really fabulous, witty ads that will be wasted on out-of-work physicians, and then churning out generic and repetitive blog entries.

I mean, that would really suck for your blog readers. It's better for us that things are set up like they are. ;)

I know this comment is kind of out of place but I just wanted to share with you how sad I am about your cat... I got a kitty when I was 8 years old named Oliver and about 2 years ago we had to put him to sleep. He had leukemia and he was suffering, you could tell. The vet told us he would not last longer than 3 months and he lived for a year! But there came a point when we had to just let him go... I still don't know how I feel about that but it happened, and I was very upset. I think animals do have spirits...
I hope you have good memories of your times with your cat. It gets a little easier as time goes by.

Erica -- thanks for relating your story about Oliver. I had a cat, Smokey (who was Fred's friend) who died of cancer. I loved her so much. But I think Fred will be happy to be reunited with her in heaven.

Our cat Koko is having a really hard time with the adjustment of Fred's absence. He wants to be with someone at all times and follows me around the house. His brother Boots went to live with my sister and when Stoker and I are married, we'll bring him to live with us. But in the meantime, Koko is very lonely and worried about when Fred will come home.

Linda -- you're absolutely right. It would be a waste to write witty ads for an unappreciative audience. I'm glad you pointed that out. Thanks for your comment. I know this is a big step for you, to comment on my blog. :)
